Welcome, I am Sergio

I am a digital media professional and researcher with a unique combination of academic and industry experience. For two decades I have led multi-platform digital products, from content creation and user-experience design to technical development and implementation, with an emphasis on advanced video and content delivery solutions.

ACADEMIA

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Digital Media from Georgia Tech working on the intersection of Computer Science and Journalism, specifically on how to redefine the News Story and the Journalism Theoretical Framework.

For five years I managed Georgia Tech‘s Experimental Television Lab, where I lead the development of interactive video applications for smart-tvs, tablet devices, desktop computers, video game consoles, and touch tables. Under the direction of my advisor,  Dr. Janet H. Murray, we created forward-thinking prototypes for the American Film Institute, Cartoon Network, mtvU, History Channel, Alcatel-Lucent, and Cisco. I have also worked with Dr. Irfan Essa on Computation + Journalism efforts and with Dr. Ian Bogost on NewsGames research.

Until 2011, I was an Adjunct Faculty at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile‘s Journalism School – College of Communications,  where I taught Digital Media and Interactive Narrative courses for the Journalism undergraduate program and Convergence in Journalism courses for the Master’s program. I also worked as a researcher for the World Internet Project, a global online usage study, done in association with the University of Southern California.

INDUSTRY

I have been involved on the research, design, implementation, and operations of media platforms in multi-platform environments for more than a decade, with extensive experience in the creation of new strategies and business opportunities.

Until recently, I was the Head of Product for Video for CNN Digital, where I focus on user experience and technology platforms for all sites and streaming applications.

Previously, I was the Director of Technical Product Management for TV and Mobile Applications at CNN, specifically focused on CNNgo. Before this, I was the Sr. User Experience Lead at Upwave, Turner Broadcasting’s health and wellness multi-platform property.

From 2010 to 2013 I worked for CSE, an Atlanta based integrated digital marketing agency as a Senior Developer and User Experience Lead, where I have created high-visibility websites, mobile applications, and cutting-edge experiences for AT&TCNN.com, USA TodayCoca-ColaKellogg’s, and Synacor. I have also headed the architecture and implementation of next-generation video interfaces and solutions for Comcast‘s newest set-top boxes.

In 2007 and 2008, I worked for The Weather Channel in Atlanta, where I was involved in the HD upgrade of their interactive weather graphic systems using VizRT.

Before coming to Atlanta,  I was a Web Developer, Project Leader and Online Content Editor for Canal13.cl, the internet portal for one of the most important television networks in Chile. During my five year tenure, I led the UX/UI design, information, code architecture, business development, and content production of over 50 new web sites. I also led a pioneering project to integrate TV and Web real-time results delivery during the national Elections.
